The Bronze and the Brimstone- Lory Kaufman

Written By: Kellie - Nov• 08•11

Synopsis: Hansum, Shamira and Lincoln, three teens from the 24th-century, are trapped in 14th-century Verona, Italy. They’ve survived many deadly experiences by keeping their wits about them and by introducing futuristic technology into the past. Principal among these inventions is the telescope, which brought them to the attention to the rich and powerful.

Amazingly, none of this is their biggest challenge. Because a rash illness is spreading across Verona – and it is threatening to consume everyone.
Do they have a future in this past? -Goodreads

Review: I loved the first book in Lory Kaufman’s History Camp series and so, could not wait to dive into the second book of the series, and while I didn’t love The Bronze and the Brimstone quite as much as The Lens and The Looker, I was not disappointed and still really enjoyed this read.

The concept of this series is so fantastic, and a great way to explore history while keeping the characters modern and relateable. It’s really interesting to see how these teenagers from the future handle the past. Culture shock is an understatement, and you definitely feel for these kids and everything they are put through.

That being said, I found the pacing of this story to be less to my liking than the first book, and at times the plot seemed to lull, leaving me skimming a bit in order to jump back into the action. A lot of this had to do with the romance aspect which I found a little far-fetched and soap-opera-ey. It wasn’t bad, but I wasn’t especially rooting for the characters to find their happily ever after.

Overall, I didn’t enjoy The Bronze and the Brimstone quite as much as the debut novel in this series, but it was still a great read, especially for anyone who enjoys history. I would definitely recommend this book and am curious to see how this series is going to finish off in the final book.

Dangerously Placed- Nansi Kunze

Written By: Kellie - Nov• 04•11

Synopsis: Alex Thaler can’t wait to start her dream work experience placement at Virk, where staff from all over the world mingle in an astonishing virtual office. But when an employee is found murdered, the dream becomes a nightmare—because Alex is the prime suspect. Fortunately, Alex’s friends are willing to brave shark tanks, disgusting pathology specimens, and even a nude beach in order to clear her name. Can a hippie chick, a goth girl in a lab coat, and two guys with a taste for  blowing things up really help solve the mystery before Alex becomes the next victim? -Goodreads

Review: This was such a fun story. I have always found the idea of virtual worlds to be pretty fascinating, so a story where everyday people get to go to work in a spectacular, virtual enviroment was right up my alley. The world that Nansi Kunze has created within Virk is dripping with imagination and really pulls you in as Alex puts on her suit in order to have a realistic experience in the environment right through to her last day on the job.

I also really enjoyed the supporting characters, Alex’s group of real world friends. They have a really believable group dynamic and truly acted like the teenagers they are. I also loved that the romantic interest storyline wasn’t blatantly obvious right from the get go. I won’t give it away, but tell you that it at least kept me guessing.

One thing I maybe had a bit of trouble with was that it never really felt like the main character, Alex was in any real danger of being accused of murder. For so many reasons this was the most realistic route to take but it did kind of take away from the feeling of Alex actually having anything to lose.

A fun mystery story for the technological age and definitely a recommended read.

Be sure to check out Nansi’s new website @nansikunze.com and stay tuned next week for her blog tour! On November 9th, I’ll be asking her about her writing process and how Dangerously Placed got from concept to completion.

Blood Promise- Richelle Mead

Written By: Kellie - Oct• 23•11

The recent attack on St. Vladimir’s Academy devastated the entire Moroi world. Many are dead. And, for the few victims carried off by Strigoi, their fates are even worse. A rare tattoo now adorns Rose’s neck, a mark that says she’s killed far too many Strigoi to count. But only one victim matters . . . Dimitri Belikov. Rose must now choose one of two very different paths: honoring her life’s vow to protect Lissa—her best friend and the last surviving Dragomir princess—or, dropping out of the Academy to strike out on her own and hunt down the man she loves. She’ll have to go to the ends of the earth to find Dimitri and keep the promise he begged her to make. But the question is, when the time comes, will he want to be saved?

Now, with everything at stake—and worlds away from St. Vladimir’s and her unguarded, vulnerable, and newly rebellious best friend—can Rose find the strength to destroy Dimitri? Or, will she sacrifice herself for a chance at eternal love? -Goodreads

Review: *this review contains spoilers. I get a little ranty, and it’s hard to do that without giving a little away*

Going back to Blood Promise the second time around, I really hoped I’d like it better than I did the first time. I think maybe I did, but only marginally. For me, this is definitely the week point of the series and just comes off as so unneeded. Separating Lissa and Rose not only makes for a really convoluted double story but really takes away from some of the essence of this series. In my mind Rose would never abandon Lissa. Yeah, love makes you do the crazy but as much as Demitri wouldn’t want to be Strogoi, he wouldn’t want Rose to abandon her purpose either.

I found the newest addition to this series, Sydney to be oh so blah. She just doesn’t grow on me at all and to me it seems like the story would have benefited from removing her role entirely. The idea of the alchemists is an interesting addition, but give Sydney a little spunk, she’s just too timid to fit into Rose’s world.

Also, is anyone else reminded of Season 2 of Buffy? Buffy and Angel are in love, he’s a good Vampire (okay, only half Vampire in this case). Oh damn, now he’s a bad vampire and Buffy know she has to kill him even though it breaks her heart. Except in Buffy’s case, she didn’t have to trek all over the world and away from her friends to do what needed to be done.

Okay, so maybe I’m being a bit harsh here and if this book was a standalone, I might have even thought it was pretty good. But as a part of VA, I was disappointed. It just doesn’t live up to the incredible writing of the rest of the series. Thankfully, from here this series explodes and is nothing but fantastic. So, if like me, you were disappointed by this book, stick it out! This is just a rough patch in an otherwise great series.

Toronto SpecFic Colloquium

Written By: Kellie - Oct• 17•11

This past Saturday I volunteered at the 2nd annual Toronto SpecFic Colloquium, where lovers of all things genre fiction came together to listen to some fantastic speakers talk on this years topic “Modern Mythology”. It was a great day, and I’m really glad I got to be a part of it.

The speakers included Mike Carey, Peter Watts and Emily Pohl-Weary but for me the highlight was Caitlin Sweet and Lesley Livingston. The two of them are clearly great friends so it was a lot of fun to watch them banter back and forth about fantasy and writing, frequently including the audience in their discussion. Their topic was “Making up Worlds…and Words” but they frequently went off on seemingly random tangents that were sometimes hard to follow but always massively insightful.

As fantastic as the speakers were, one thing that especially impressed me was the crowd! The audience was asking such intelligent questions throughout the entire day, which really brought out some interesting points from the speakers. Granted, it is usually pretty safe to assume that a group of people who are all passionate about reading will be intelligent but I know I couldn’t dissect and analyze all of the topics the way so many of the attendees did.

If you’re in the Toronto area, next years colloquium is planned for October 20th. You should definitely check it out as you will definitely take a way a whole new perspective on your most beloved genres. This was only the second year of the event and it is already largely successful and so I can’t wait to see what they do next year.

Shadow Kiss- Richelle Mead

Written By: Kellie - Oct• 16•11

Synopsis: Is Rose’s fate to kill the person she loves most? It’s springtime at St. Vladimir’s Academy, and Rose Hathaway is this close to graduation. Since Mason’s death, Rose hasn’t been feeling quite right. She has dark flashbacks in the middle of practice, can’t concentrate in class, and has terrifying dreams about Lissa. But Rose has an even bigger secret …. She’s in love with Dimitri. And this time, it’s way more than a crush. Then Strigoi target the academy in the deadliest attack in Moroi history, and Dimitri is taken. Rose must protect Lissa at all costs, but keeping her best friend safe could mean losing Dimitri forever…
-Goodreads

Review: Another epic addition to the Vampire Academy series. Not only was the plot of most of the story really intriguing but the ending was just mind blowing. So mind blowing that if this entire book had been a three star, the ending alone would have pulled it way way up, all on its own. Either way, this book was great all the way through.

I loved learning more about the politics behind vampire society. There are so many nuances and power plays going on all the time that it is so much fun to follow. It is especially interesting because Rose occasionally gets to look in on the inner workings of court through her best friend, Lissa’s mind. Lissa is a royal, and the last of her line so there is a lot expected of her but it also gives the characters (and readers) a level of access they might not otherwise have.

Rose is still a stellar main character. Sometimes I have trouble relating to the tough as nails, kick-ass chicks in books but there is a very human (heh, irony) quality to Rose that you don’t see in enough characters anymore. Through the first three books you really do see her growing as a person and in her abilities, this girl is hardcore.

Anyways, another great book in easily my favorite vampire series.

Blood Bound- Rachel Vincent

Written By: Kellie - Oct• 10•11

Synopsis: Most can’t touch the power. But Liv Warren is special – a paranormal tracker who follows the scent of blood. Liv makes her own rules, and the most important one is trust no one.

But when her friend’s daughter goes missing, Liv has no choice but to find the girl. Thanks to a childhood oath, Liv can’t rest until the child is home safe. But that means trusting Cam Caballero, the former lover forbidden to her. -Goodreads

Review: Rachel Vincent does it again! Blood Bound is nothing short of excellent! Already, I think I’m going to like this series even better than Shifters. This book has everything you have come to expect from such a great author, but with a bit of a dark streak running through the book.

Unlike Faythe (Shifters), Blood Bound’s main character Liv hasn’t grown up on a beautiful ranch, constantly protected and sheltered. Liv is Skilled, which definitely has it’s advantages but has lead her into a dark world where she has to do what she can to get by, and it’s not always pretty. She hasn’t always been the hero.

Any complaints I have are so minor they don’t even qualify. The only thing that even through me for a bit of a loop is that of the group of girls that made up Liv’s childhood group, at least two are possibly the most powerful in existence of their particular skill. What are the chances? Since only one of those characters is seen in this story though, I am happy to let it go.

The world created within these pages is a believable one. Super powers haven’t lead to superheros. People are willing to do whatever it takes to get by, even if it means using their advantages. Everything about this book is fantastic, and I definitely recommend it to well, pretty much everyone. If you like superheros, dystopia, urban fantasy, x-men… this story just rocks and you should pretty much be reading it riiiggght now!

Frostbite- Richelle Mead

Written By: Kellie - Oct• 09•11

Synopsis: It’s winter break at St. Vladimir’s, but Rose is feeling anything but festive. A massive Strigoi attack has put the school on high alert, and now the Academy’s crawling with Guardians—including Rose’s hard-hitting mother, Janine Hathaway. And if hand-to-hand combat with her mom wasn’t bad enough, Rose’s tutor Dimitri has his eye on someone else, her friend Mason’s got a huge crush on her, and Rose keeps getting stuck in Lissa’s head while she’s making out with her boyfriend, Christian! The Strigoi are closing in, and the Academy’s not taking any risks… This year, St. Vlad’s annual holiday ski trip is mandatory.

But the glittering winter landscape and the posh Idaho resort only create the illusion of safety. When three friends run away in an offensive move against the deadly Strigoi, Rose must join forces with Christian to rescue them. But heroism rarely comes without a price… -Goodreads

Review: Back to the world of Vampire Academy! Frostbite is the second book in the series and a pretty fantastic follow up to the debut novel. I didn’t love it quite as much as the first, but the storyline still kept me turning page after page so I am in no mind to complain. Richelle Mead rocks, no question about that.

I won’t make you waste too much time reading me gush about this series as much of what I said in my original post still stands for this book. The main character, Rose stands out in an already packed crowd of kick-ass heroines, the world and mythology behind this series offers an actually interesting take on vampires and the writing is nothing short of fantastic. A must read series for YA book lovers.

So, why four stars instead of five. Part of it is that intangible element that is nearly impossible to put into words, but part of it, for me at least, has to do with the main premise of this book. The entire school is going to vacation at a ski-lodge. The reasoning behind it is even there to an extent but it just seems like something you would see in a tv show about a high school. “In a very special Christmas episode, the students of St. Vladamirs…” you get the point, and I don’t mean to mock it, but it just seemed a little out of place with the darker undertones of this series.

I am so in love with this series, despite the fact that I try to avoid vampire books. Vampire Academy at it’s core is about friendship and loyalty, not something you see in enough YA books. Of course, there is definitely a steamy romance on top of everything else, but to me it’s just the icing on an already delicious cake.

Waiting on Wednesday

Written By: Kellie - Oct• 05•11

Today, I’m participating in Waiting on Wednesday, a weekly event hosted by Jill at Breaking The Spine. This event highlights the upcoming releases that we are eagerly awaiting!

This week I’m waiting on….

SHADOW BOUND BY RACHEL VINCENT! Which is pretty much torturous because I love! love! loved! the first book in this series and as far as I can tell, there isn’t even a set release date for the next one yet. Eep! So good though! Review coming soon!

Top Ten Tuesday (04/10)

Written By: Kellie - Oct• 04•11

This weeks list is the ‘top ten book endings that left me with my mouth hanging open’, and honestly I really doubt I’m going to be able to think of ten, but here goes! In no real order.

1. Vampire Academy #3 Spirit Bound- Can’t say why as that’s pretty spoilertastic
2. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows- Really just a =O it’s really over. Sad face.
3. My Sisters Keeper- Borrowed this from a list but ohhh myyy yes! this was my first Jodi Picoult so I didn’t realize all of her endings were mind boggling. This one is especially jaw dropping though. Never, ever saw that coming.
4. If I Stay- I just didn’t feel like I really got any closure from this heart-wrenching book. Speaking of…
5. Mockingjay- Seriously?! Seriously?
6. The Scorch Trials- As if The Maze Runner wasn’t bad enough, the end of book two left me… well, nowhere. It dropped me off in the middle of a desert, brought me back in and then essentially dropped me down a hole leading nowhere. If that makes any sense.
7. Divergent- This one was a great ending and had me dying for Insurgent.

Okay, I didn’t quite make it to ten but and lot of these endings could actually make it on the ‘Endings I HATED” list. Not all, but a most. Eep! Well, they were still jaw dropping, so I’ll count it.
