New Year 2013 Giveaway Hop

happy hop

Happy (almost) New Year everyone. 2012 was amazing, and I’m convince that 2013 will be even better. To help kick off the new year, as well as my new blog, I am participating in the Happy New Year 2013 Giveaway hop and am giving away the chance to have a character named after you in my upcoming YA novel, Mortality.

Mortality is coming out in March of this year… so how is it this is even possible? It’s all through the beauty of self publishing. The book is already written and is currently being picked apart by my wonderful editor. The two characters I am looking for names for have already been written, and their fates are sealed. What they need are names. Both characters can be either male or female and can have any (non-joke) name.

PRIZE: Name a character in my upcoming YA zombie survival novel, Mortality (March, 2013) and one of the first physical copies of the book.

Reviewers: I am also still taking sign ups for the blog tour which will be running in March. Tour hosts will receive a digital copy of the book. If you’re interested, you can sign up here.

Details: After entering this giveaway via Rafflecopter, please comment with the following information.

Happy (almost) New Year everyone. And here at Snarky Bird Book reviews, a new year means a new blog. So, congrats… you are one of the very first to see the official unveiling of my new blog. I was previously posting my reviews at ReaWrite.com, and am still in the process of  switching things over, but I hope you’ll bare with me.

2012 was a great year in books, and I’m a little sad that it is coming to a close, but there is no question that 2013 is going to be an amazing year for reads.

I am taking part in Cuddlebuggery’s Giveaway Hop to share two of my favorite reads of 2012 and my most anticipated title of 2013 (not surprisingly, that would be the book I wrote).  Click on the cover of each title to go to it’s Goodreads page.

Excerpt: There Comes a Prophet

Written By: Kellie - Dec• 14•12

I’m very excited to be a part of the blog tour for There Comes A Prophet by David Litwack.

Synopsis: Who among us will cast aside a comfortable existence and risk death to follow a dream?

A world kept peaceful for a thousand years by the magic of the ruling vicars. But a threat lurks from a violent past. Wizards from the darkness have hidden their sorcery in a place called the keep and left a trail of clues that have never been solved.

Nathaniel has grown up longing for more but unwilling to challenge the vicars. Until his friend Thomas is taken for a teaching, the mysterious coming-of-age ritual. Thomas returns but with his dreams ripped away. When Orah is taken next, Nathaniel tries to rescue her and ends up in the prisons of Temple City. There he meets the first keeper of the ancient clues. But when he seeks the keep, what he finds is not magic at all.

EXCERPT

Excerpt Two: The Teaching
Thomas stared out, trying to see to the opposite wall. It had to be close, because he could feel his boots pressing against it. But try as he would, he couldn’t penetrate the darkness. There was no glimmer to help, only the darkest dark he’d ever known. No moon, no stars, no hint of light. A dark to haunt one’s dreams.
Sometimes, he’d startle to the grating of the ceiling cover being removed. Light would pour into the room, flooding him with exhilaration…He’d stand, stretch his stiff limbs and look into the plump faces of the vicars surrounding him, seniors all with their decorated hats. They, in turn, would look down on him sympathetically before beginning a litany of the horrors of the darkness.

EXCERPT:

When it happened I was excited – at first. I was a fan of the movies, the books, the games…all of it. So when those first reports came on the television and hit the net I was probably the most excited person on the planet. I mean, you always wonder “what if” when you see it in films, but then to have it actually happen, it really gets you going. That is, until they’re banging on your front door. Or the door of someone you really, truly care about. Someone you love.

That is when the excitement fades to fear. The fear can turn to horror. But right before that there is a brief moment where human instinct takes over and you choose to either fight or run. You don’t think, you just act. That is how I’m still alive. And it is probably why she is dead.

My story is not a happy one. It is not about heroics or unity or the fight to persevere. It is the story of survival. The only thing a person could really do during the crisis. It is the story of trying to protect someone you love and failing. It is a story of love, friendship and ultimately death. I’m not holding back. I am going to tell you everything. For some, this story will be harder to read then it was to write. For others, it won’t. Either way, this is my story. This is my account of the zombie apocalypse.

I was trying to be reassuring and bring my students back to the mood they were in before we stopped to eat, which not many were doing. But I knew there was something big going on.

I could hear the words “bioterrorism,” “widespread” and “thousands dead.” I could hear people talking about countries all over the world. CNN had this gorgeous new anchor,

Rebecca Mailey and I had a sort of boyhood crush on her. I was 29 and still entitled to fantasize about celebrities. So when she was the one who sent a chill down my spine, I thought it was sort of ironic and could not help but laugh. I’ll never forget the colorless look on her face when she uttered, “We are now getting scattered reports of incidents here in the United States.”

I never finished booting up my laptop. My instincts told me to get everyone out of the rest area and back on the bus. It was a quiet on the way home. I told everyone to call their parents and let them know that they were okay and would be home soon. As we boarded the bus two police cruisers went speeding in the opposite direction, sirens blaring. It was unnerving, given what we just heard. The rest of the ride home was dead quiet.

 “It’s happening everywhere.”

“What is?”

“This…thing. People are dying. Riots happening everywhere. They said that there are drugs in the water supply that makes you want to hurt others. Then they said it wasn’t drugs, but a massive psychological event caused by a solar flare or something. Another guy said it’s been happening for a few weeks, but until now the government had it bottled up. And then…”

“Keith.” I had to stop him. The talking heads on TV had him all turned around.

“Yeah?”

“Take a breath. Clearly they don’t really know what is happening. So the question remains. Now, what do you know for sure? What do they know for certain? Think simple, Keith.”

“I don’t know. People are killing each other, I guess. They haven’t really said why or how, just that it’s happening.”

That part bothered me. If it were a terrorist event, then someone would be taking credit by now. If it were a disaster, then they would know the cause. Not knowing information…that is when I became hooked. That is when it became…interesting.

I looked up at the clock on the microwave. It was almost 10 AM. I really slept in late. I went and checked my cell phone. Seven missed calls? I realized then that I still had the phone on silent from the tournament. One call from Keith’s mom. Two from my parents? That was odd. Four from Ashley. Damn…I had promised to go over early this morning. She’s probably pissed right now. I went back into the bedroom and turned the TV on as I checked my voicemail.

“Hi, it’s Keith’s Mom. Sorry I’m home so late. Thanks for watching him.”

All over the country people are fighting against…

“It’s mom. Calling to see if you’re okay. Call me back.”

Military response is beginning to organize…

“I need you! Now! Please hurry! Call me back!”

We have confirmed video reports of…

“Why aren’t you answering?! Oh good…I hope…call me back…”

Rising from the dead and attacking…

“They’re outside! Help me! I need you! I need to hear your voice!”

All over the world people are coming back from the dead and killing others.

“I love you…Mom! Look out!” There’s a crash of glass on the phone.

Stay indoors. Lock your doors. Board up your windows. Do not go outside.

No words on the last message…just another crash and the sound of a scream.

I was paralyzed.

The phone fell from my hand.

Sixteen-year-old Phoebe Pope has enrolled at the Campus Below: a spy academy for shape-shifters hidden deep beneath the grounds of a boarding school whose humans unknowingly protect it. There, thanks to a carefully planned schedule, she leads a double life: spy trainee Below and normal teenager Above.

As if two course loads, concealing a secret power she alone wields, and coping with her father’s recent death weren’t enough, Phoebe finds herself developing major feelings for actor and teen heartthrob Colten Chase, who attends the Campus Above and appears to be majoring in winning Phoebe’s heart. But when officials learn that Phoebe may be at the center of a startling prophecy, she becomes the target of shape-shifting assassins who will stop at nothing to suppress the truth.

Promo: A Soul for Chaos by Crista McHugh

Written By: Kellie - Dec• 05•12

Synopsis:

Book 2 of the Soulbearer Trilogy

Life is dull without a little Chaos.

Trouble is more than just a nickname for Arden Soulbearer. It seems to follow her wherever she goes. And no one knows this better than her protector, Devarius Tel’Brien.

Dev thought that by moving Arden to Gravaria so she could learn how to control Loku, the chaos god whose soul inhabits her body, life would be simpler. Wrong. Not only is he continually torn between his duty and his growing feelings for the Soulbearer, but he also has to contend with the rival prince who wishes to claim her heart. Adding to his problems, a group of powerful mages have banded together to rid the world of the disembodied chaos god once and for all. Of course, that means they have to destroy Arden in the process.

About the Author

Growing up in small town Alabama, Crista relied on story-telling as a natural way for her to pass the time and keep her two younger sisters entertained. Of course, that also means she’s inclined to suffer some of the same maladies that plague many southern writers like overuse of simile and metaphor, exaggeration, melodramatic writing style, and the ever-popular long-winded sentence.

She currently lives in the Audi-filled suburbs of Seattle with her husband and two children, maintaining her alter ego of mild-mannered physician by day while she continues to pursue writing on nights and weekends.

Just for laughs, here are some of the jobs she’s had in the past to pay the bills: barista, bartender, sommelier, stagehand, actress, morgue attendant, and autopsy assistant.

And she’s also a recovering LARPer. (She blames it on her crazy college days)

Semi-Hiatus + Giveaway

Written By: Kellie - Dec• 04•12

So, I am semi-sad to tell you that ReaWrite is semi going away. I am currently in the process of moving everything over to a new domain and renaming the blog. Everything else will stay somewhat the same, and I’m actually really looking forward to starting fresh.

Due the time it will take to move everything over to the new domain, as well as general holiday madness… things will be slowing down around here for the month of December. I still have a lot of promo posts and some meme’s scheduled but I’ll be saving my reviews for the new website. Starting in January, you’ll be able to find me at Snarky Bird Book Reviews.

Second… as some of you know, I am currently ‘Joan of ARCs’ for Spencer Hill Press. The Spencer Hill team has come together for the holiday season with a giveaway that will have three separate winners. Yay!

Unfortunately, I belieevvvvee this is only open to U.S. residents.

Cover Reveal: Mortality by Kellie Sheridan (Me!) + Giveaway

Written By: Kellie - Dec• 03•12

Well, this is it. Today is an insanely big day for me and I wouldn’t be surprised if I don’t sleep at all… Cover reveal day for Mortality. Must remember to breathe. Earlier this year I decided to stop waiting around for permission (from myself as much as publishers) to be an author and just dive in. I decided to combine my two current literary loves of zombies and young adult fiction into something that (I think) is pretty awesome, and I can’t wait to share it with all of you.

Mortality doesn’t have a set release date yet as that will depend quite a bit on my lovely editors, but my best guess is it will be available in digital formats in March and physical copies will be for sale on Amazon in April. Review copies will likely be going out in February. You can keep up to date by following me on either Twitter or on my professional blog/website.

For now, we’ve got the cover which was designed by the amazing Ravven (who I highly recommend), the books first official blurb and a zombie-tastic giveaway. You can also head over to my author blog for a look at the making of Mortality’s book cover and some of the other ideas that Ravven and I played around with.

Synopsis: After surviving a deadly plague outbreak, sixteen-year-old Savannah thought she had lived through the very worst of human history. There was no way to know that the miracle vaccine would put everyone at risk for a fate worse than un-death.

Now, two very different kinds of infected walk the Earth, intent on nothing but feeding and destroying what little remains of civilization. When the inoculated are bitten, infection means watching on in silent horror as self-control disappears and the idea of feasting on loved ones becomes increasingly hard to ignore.

Starving and forced to live inside of the abandoned high school, all Savannah wants is the chance to fight back. When a strange boy arrives with a plan to set everything right, she gets her chance. Meeting Cole changes everything. Mere survival will never be enough.

Guest Post: Finding the time to write by Keeley Smith

Written By: Kellie - Nov• 30•12

Firstly I want to thank Kellie for giving me space on her blog for my book, Returned, and also doing a review. I really appreciate it.

“There aren’t enough hours in the day.”

This is one of my favourite sayings. Well, I wouldn’t say it was a favourite; perhaps the right word would be, overused? But seriously, we need to add a few more hours to a day, or our bodies shouldn’t need sleep.

I work a full time job in a school so I find that when I get home my evenings are taken up with writing, plotting and editing. I still can’t believe people think that being a writer is easy. It’s not.

Far from it.

It’s important to find a balance, so whilst I write I need to live my life. So when do I find the time for friends and family? I have to designate time. Knowing when they are coming helps me to sort out my writing schedule. It still doesn’t stop my head from churning ideas whilst I’m with them. The switch has no off button.

To give people an idea of my limited time I thought I would break down my evening schedule:

4.30pm – I get in from work, change; start up the laptop whilst I’m sorting the mail etc.

4.45- 5.30pm – I usually designate this time for twitter but I’m sneaky and whilst I should be doing book stuff I do go on twitter. It’s also connected to my phone so I do spend a lot more time than I should on twitter.

5.30-6.30pm – Food. This is usually the time I talk to my husband whilst inhaling much needed energy.

6.30-7.30pm– I would usually spend an hour looking through my Facebook author page, my website or thinking about new blog updates.

7.30-….- I usually spend the rest of the evening writing, I will stop once I start sleeping and typing at the same time.

It’s difficult to regiment the timings. It’s especially hard because I’m easily distracted. My laptop is my saviour, without it I couldn’t write my books. It’s also my pitfall. Easy access to the internet is not good. It only takes one slip and my brain decides it wants to go on holiday. I often find myself searching the craziest of things, especially when I’ve got the dreaded block.

I wish I could tell you that I’m one of those really organised authors. I’m not. I often have one of the mad panic dashes where something needed to be done yesterday. But to be honest, I’m doing something I love so I don’t mind the heart palpitations. I don’t mind the sleepless nights, the deadline panic (I set myself deadlines, yep, I’m crazy.) I suppose the moral of my post is that you can never find the time to do what you need to do. Just spend what time you do have, loving what you do.
