Rating: 3.5/5- Started out a little rough, but by the end I couldn’t put it down.

Synopsis: The world hasn’t ended…yet.

In this sequel to MONUMENT 14, the group of survivors, originally trapped together in a superstore by a series of escalating disasters, has split in two. Most of the kids are making a desperate run on their recently repaired school bus for the Denver airport where they hope to reunite with their parents, be evacuated to safety, and save their dying friend.

But the world outside is dark and filled with dangerous chemicals that turn people into bloodthirsty monsters, and not all the kids were willing to get on the bus. Left behind in a sanctuary that has already been disturbed once, the remaining kids try to rebuild the community they lost. But when the issues are life and death, love and hate, who can you really trust?

Thoughts: Wowza! I stayed up way too late last night finishing this book. This is book two of the Monument 14 series by Emmy Laybourne, and I suspect the final book in the series. There were some definite ups and downs both in terms of story and quality, but if you liked the first book in this series (which I did), then you’ll want to read this one. So, let’s talk about it!

Unlike the first book, this one has two different POV’s, brothers Dean and Alex. Their voices blended together a bit much for my taste, but their stories were totally different and equally intense. The first half of Sky on Fire was an interesting reading experience. It fluctuated between dragging and almost being too tense for me to keep reading (but I’m a wimp). Dean was still at the superstore, while Alex was on the run with most of the kids trying to make it to the Denver airport in a very hostile environment. The stakes are definitely high in Sky on Fire. In the final third of the book almost every chapter seems to end with a massive WHOA moment before you’re taken back to the other POV character.

I should mention that while Alex and Dean could have been more distinct from each other, the rest of the characters were extremely well done. It took me a few chapters to remember which little boy was which, but otherwise everyone had a distinct (and at times hilarious) persona. You’ll find yourself really rooting at all the little kids get to safety because you know it would break your heart if any one of them died.

My biggest complaint with the book was some of the writing. Most of it was decently crafted and suitably tense, but some bits were just bad. You’ll find yourself doing a few double takes just to make sure you read that right, but if you’re willing to push past, the story is well worth a few awkward moments.

Going into this book, I didn’t realize it was the last in the series, but if you’re already a fan of these books I think you’ll be happy with the conclusion that Emmy Laybourne came up with. If you’re not already a fan of this series, and are a fan of books like Gone by Michael Grant, then I would absolutely recommend checking out Monument 14 and then Sky on Fire.

Review: Scarlet by Marissa Meyer

Publish Date: February 5th, 2013

Goodreads

Rating: 4/5 – Still in love with this Earthen/Lunar version of our world.

Synopsis: Cinder, the cyborg mechanic, returns in the second thrilling installment of the bestselling Lunar Chronicles. She’s trying to break out of prison—even though if she succeeds, she’ll be the Commonwealth’s most wanted fugitive.

Halfway around the world, Scarlet Benoit’s grandmother is missing. It turns out there are many things Scarlet doesn’t know about her grandmother or the grave danger she has lived in her whole life. When Scarlet encounters Wolf, a street fighter who may have information as to her grandmother’s whereabouts, she is loath to trust this stranger, but is inexplicably drawn to him, and he to her. As Scarlet and Wolf unravel one mystery, they encounter another when they meet Cinder. Now, all of them must stay one step ahead of the vicious Lunar Queen Levana, who will do anything for the handsome Prince Kai to become her husband, her king, her prisoner.

Thoughts: It took me a long time to read Cinder, but when I finally did, I fell SO in love–with this world, with Marissa Meyer’s writing. With all of it. Then came Scarlet. The stars just did not align for me and this book. Not that I didn’t like it, because it was great. When I first got the ARC, I didn’t have time to read it. Then once I started, it went missing for over a week (somehow hidden under a pile of laundry) which really broke apart the story. Ahh, well… I guess I’ll just have to reread it.

So… getting down to details. I wasn’t sure what to think when I first read that book two wouldn’t be all about Cinder, but it worked. I really liked Scarlet as a red riding-hood character and how her introduction opened up the world. I was less convinced on the Wolf element though, and could never really get behind that character. The wolf concept here seemed a little forced, but I’m happy enough to overlook that for a great story.

Cinder is still my absolute favorite. Love her. I also really enjoyed her rag-tag gang in this one. I hope she continues to be a main character in the coming books rather than just continuing to split the focus between a growing cast of characters. The description for the next book says it will feature Cinder and Repunzel though, so we should be all set for all kinds of awesomeness.

I don’t want to wait until February. :(

Excerpt:The ding of the doorbell resounded in the house before I finished my assignment. I grinned. Must be Eirik, my unofficial boyfriend. I jumped up, raced to the door, and yanked it open.

“About time you got he…”

I took a step back, my pulse leaping. In one sweeping glance, I took in the stranger’s shaggy black hair, piercing Pacific-blue eyes under arched eyebrows, black leather jacket, and hip-hugging jeans. Either fate had conjured the poster boy of all my fantasies and deposited him on my doorstep or I was dreaming.

I closed my eyes tight and then opened them again.

He was still there, the only thing missing was a bow or a note with my name pinned to his forehead. Irrationally, I wondered how it would feel to run my fingers through his hair. It was luxurious and so long it brushed the collar of his jacket. His lips moved, and I realized he was speaking.

“What?” I asked. The single word came out in two syllables, and I cringed. Lame, Raine.

“I asked if you’d seen Eirik Seville,” the stranger said impatiently in a deep, commanding voice as though he was used to giving orders, “and you shook your head. Does that mean you didn’t understand what I said, don’t know him, or don’t know where he is?”

“I, uh, the third one.” Could I be any lamer? Worse, warmth crept up my face. “I mean, I don’t know where he is,” I said in a squeaky voice.

“He said he would be at the house of…” he pulled out a piece of paper from the back of his biker glove, the fingerless kind, and read, “Raine Cooper.”

“That’s me. Lorraine Cooper, but everyone calls me Raine. You know, rain with a silent E,” I said even though he didn’t ask for an explanation. I tended to blabber when nervous. “Yeah, well, Eirik’s not here.”

“When do you expect him? Or should I ask when does he usually get here, Raine with an E?” the guy asked.

I bristled, not liking his mocking tone or the way he spoke slowly as though I was a dimwit. “He doesn’t always come here after school, you know. You could try his house or text him.”

Mr. Hot-but-arrogant shrugged. “If I wanted to use modern technology I would, but I’d rather not. Could you do me a favor?”

Use modern technology? Which cave did he crawl from? He spoke with a trace of an accent that had a familiar lilt. British or Aussie? I could never tell the difference.

He sighed. “You’re shaking your head again. Did my question confuse you? Am I talking too fast, too slow, or is it me? I’ve been told my presence tends to, uh, throw people off.”

I crossed my arms, lifted my chin, and stared down my nose at him. I was usually the calm one among my friends, the peacemaker, but this guy was seriously pushing my buttons with his arrogance. “No.”

His eyebrows rose and met the lock of hair falling over his forehead. “No to what?”

“No, you didn’t confuse me. And no, I won’t do you a favor.”

He rolled his eyes, plucked wraparound sunglasses from the breast pocket of his jacket, and slipped them on before turning to leave.

Yeah, good riddance. To copy Cora’s favorite saying, ‘he just lost hotness points’.

Ruby's Fire FRONTcov2_STINE

Ruby’s Fire
Catherine Stine
Series: Fireseed, #2 (however, can be read as a stand-alone)
Publication date:  June 26, 2013
Genre: YA Sci-Fi

If everything about you changes, what remains?
Seventeen year-old Ruby, long-pledged to the much older Stiles from the Fireseed desert cult, escapes with only a change of clothes, a pouch of Oblivion Powder and her mute little brother, Thorn. Arriving at The Greening, a boarding school for orphaned teens, she can finally stop running. Or can she? The Greening is not what it seems. Students are rampaging out of control and as she cares for the secret Fireseed crop, she experiences frightening physical changes. She’s ashamed of her attraction to burly, hard-talking Blane, the resident bodyguard, and wonders why she can’t be happy with the gentler Armonk. She’s long considered her great beauty a liability, a thing she’s misused in order to survive. And how is she to stop her dependence on Oblivion to find a real beauty within, using her talent as a maker of salves, when she has nightmares of Stiles without it?

When George Axiom, wealthy mogul of Vegas-by-the-Sea offers a huge cash prize for the winner of a student contest, Ruby is hopeful she might collect the prize to rescue her family and friends from what she now knows is a dangerous cult. But when Stiles comes to reclaim her, and Thorn sickens after creating the most astonishing contest project of all, the world Ruby knows is changed forever. This romantic fantasy set in 2099 on earth has a crafty heroine in Ruby, and a swoonworthy cast, which will surely appeal to the YA and new adult audience.

Review: Oath Bound by Rachel Vincent

oath bound

Series: Unbound, #3
Publisher: Harlequin MIRA
Publish Date: April 30th, 2013

Goodreads

Rating: 5/5 – Please tell me this series isn’t over!!!

About the book: The Tower Syndicate will fall…

The secret daughter of the head of an infamous Skilled crime family, Sera Brandt has hidden her past, her potential and especially her powers. But when a tragedy strikes her other family, Sera needs justice. And the only way to get it is to reveal her heritage–including a rare Skill–and take the reins of the Tower Syndicate from her cunning and malicious aunt.

If he can figure out how…

Kristopher Daniels might have the answer. He’s fought the syndicate to protect his sisters, but he’d never realized just how close to the new heir he needed to get….

And if they can survive

Neither is used to trusting. But there’s something between them that can’t be ignored. And so Sera is on the run with a man she can’t figure out, a target on her back and the new knowledge of just how powerful she really is….

Thoughts: I’ve been looking forward to Oath Bound for so long, and when it finally arrived on my doorstep, I kind of did a happy dance. As far as I’m concerned, no one does Urban Fantasy like Rachel Vincent, and she will reign for a long, long time on my favorite authors list. Oath Bound… was awesome.

Like the first two books in this series, book three focused on a new couple. This time it was Kori and Kenley’s brother, Kris and Sera, who is the illegitimate offspring of one of a recently deceased crime boss. Drama all around. I liked both Kris and Sera, and I really liked the two of them together (if you’ve read any of these books, this is hardly a spoiler). Sera’s character did seem a little less organic, but she was easy to root before and hardly a damsel in distress. No complaints!

The stakes were higher in this book that in the previous two, but somehow everything seemed a little more relaxed. There was a lot of sitting around and just hanging out with some awesome characters, and it never got boring. Vincent took the time to make her readers care about every single one of the characters, and it really paid off. Even Kenley, the only Daniels’ sibling who hasn’t had POV chapters in this series is well fleshed out and difficult not to care about. I want to be a Daniels!

I’m not sure if there are going to be any more books in this series. I’ve seen it listed as a trilogy all over the place, but there were a few things left unfinished with this last book. I’m not sure what couple could be covered to tell that story, but if Rachel Vincent writes it, I will read it. Fingers crossed!

Review: You Look Different In Real Life

you look different in real life

Publisher: Harper Teen
Publish Date: June 4th, 2013

Goodreads

Synopsis: The premise was simple: five kids, just living their lives. There’d be a new movie about them every five years, starting in kindergarten. But no one could have predicted what the cameras would capture. And no one could have predicted that Justine would be the star.

Now sixteen, Justine doesn’t feel like a star anymore. In fact, when she hears the crew has gotten the green light to film Five at Sixteen, all she feels is dread. The kids who shared the same table in kindergarten have become teenagers who hardly know one another. And Justine, who was so funny and edgy in the first two movies, feels like a disappointment.

But these teens have a bond that goes deeper than what’s on film. They’ve all shared the painful details of their lives with countless viewers. They all know how it feels to have fans as well as friends. So when this latest movie gives them the chance to reunite, Justine and her costars are going to take it. Because sometimes, the only way to see yourself is through someone else’s eyes. -Goodreads

Thoughts: I wish I’d written this review sooner. As soon as I finished this book, I was absolutely buzzing with how much I enjoyed it. Inevitably I got distracted, and about a week has passed, but I hope I can do it justice, because I REALLY loved this book. The concept alone was enough to catch my interest, but the writing and the characters held me from cover to cover.

You Look Different In Real Life is one of those books that reminds me why I keep coming back to contemporary reads, even though I’m more of a fantasy/apocalyptic girl. All of the characters were interesting, funny and genuine. Of the five main kids, I don’t think there was one that I didn’t just want to stop and hug at some point in the book.

The thing with reviewing books you love, is that you’re never sure how much you should give away. I’d love to go into all the little details that made me love this book, but at the same time I think you should just dive in and experience it for yourself. This story is very much about the study of people, so if that’s something you can get behind, then I very much recommend this read. There’s also some fun bits in here for film makers and documentary buffs. Okay, and a small dose of reality TV, but you didn’t hear it from me.

The version I read was an ARC, but I will absolutely be picking up a copy as soon as it’s available.

Tour (Review & Interview + Giveaway)- The Summer I Became A Nerd by Leah Rae Miller

Written By: Kellie - May• 14•13

the summer i became a nerd

It’s a blog tour day, it’s a blog tour day!! Who’s excited?! I’m excited. Today we have all kinds of goodies to celebrate the release of The Summer I Became a Nerd by Leah Rae Miller–A review, an interview, and a giveaway.

So, let’s get to it, shall we!

About the bookOn the outside, seventeen-year-old Madelyne Summers looks like your typical blond cheerleader—perky, popular, and dating the star quarterback. But inside, Maddie spends more time agonizing over what will happen in the next issue of her favorite comic book than planning pep rallies with her squad. That she’s a nerd hiding in a popular girl’s body isn’t just unknown, it’s anti-known. And she needs to keep it that way.
Summer is the only time Maddie lets her real self out to play, but when she slips up and the adorkable guy behind the local comic shop’s counter uncovers her secret, she’s busted. Before she can shake a pom-pom, Maddie’s whisked into Logan’s world of comic conventions, live-action role-playing, and first-person-shooter video games. And she loves it. But the more she denies who she really is, the deeper her lies become…and the more she risks losing Logan forever. -Goodreads

Review: As soon as I heard about this book, I contacted the author to see if I could get my sticky little hands on a review copy… the concept was just too awesome to pass up. Preppy, highschool cheerleader lets her freak-flag fly.

The main character Maddie is a pretty typical cheerleader, but it’s only on the surface. She’s also an epic comic book nerd, but an epicly embarrassing moment a few years back made her feel like she had to repress all that. Anyways, the stars align and Maddie meets Logan, whose parents run the local comic book shop, and sparks fly.

I won’t go into the whole plot for you, but this book is a lot of fun for nerds and non-nerds alike. But as someone who is undoubtedly a nerd (although, I’ve never tried LARPing), there were a lot of references in here that made me all kinds of giddy. I really enjoyed both Maddie and Logan as character and was definitely rooting for them throughout the whole story.

The one thing I will say is that the book was a little predictable at times, and the message wasn’t even a little bit subtle–but that didn’t take away from the enjoyment of the story for me.

The Summer I Became a Nerd is a quick, cute read that is perfect for the coming season.

Interview with Leah Rae Miller!

leah raeKellie- From concept to completion, how long did TSIBAN take you to write?

Leah- From point A: getting the idea and sitting down to write the first word, to point Z: signing the contract with Entangled, it took about six months.

Kellie-
Was there any research involved in crafting the book? Please tell me you LARP’d.

Leah- I didn’t have to do much research at all other than the occasional question for a friend. I watched a lot of teenage romantic comedies like Easy A and Sixteen Candles. As far as LARPing goes, I did a lot of it in my early twenties so all I had to do was rehash those old, awesome memories.

Kellie-
Can you tell us a little bit about your writing process?

Leah- I usually start out with a simple idea. I’ll toss it around with my writer friends and let it simmer in my head. I’ll write a query for it to help pinpoint the real gist of the book. Then I sit down to write. Normally, I’ll have the first few chapters done before I find myself needing to plot.

Kellie- Without giving anything away, what was the most difficult scene for you to write?

Leah- Wow, that’s a tough one. I guess it’d have to be the final LARP scene. Even though it was my favorite scene to write, it was also hard because there’s a certain amount of action in it and a well-balanced action scene can be difficult to write.

Kellie-
What has been your favorite read of 2013 so far?

Leah- SPLINTERED by A.G. Howard was awesome! I love stories derived from classics and Anita did such a great job! I can’t wait for the second book! Team Jeb, baby!

Kellie- What’s next for you?

Leah- I have a lot of stories in the works. All different kinds, too. So hopefully, you’ll be seeing a lot more from me in the coming years!

Kellie– Thanks, Leah! I really enjoyed TSIBAN and can’t wait to see what you come out with next.
